German-born cellist Julian Metzger has lived in England since 1990; he studies at Wells Cathedral School, continuing his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, under Stefan Popov, Paul Roberts and David Dolan.
Apart from his regular performances in the UK, Julian has given concerts and recitals in Spain, France, Germany, Italy and Hong Kong, where he also recorded for Radio and TV Hong Kong. He has appeared as soloist and chamber musician at various Festivals such as the Buckingham, The Oundle, the Beaminster and the International CasalsFestival in El Vendrell, Spain.
He has worked with conductors such as Adrian Brown, Jacques Cohen, Michael Rose and many others. He has also been a soloist in Vivaldi, Lalo, CPE Bach, Kabalewski, Shostakovitch, Elgar and Walton concertos.
As a chamber musician, Julian frequently performs with members of the Maurizi Ensemble. And he is a founder member of the Metzger Ensemble, a chamber group consisting of flute, violin, viola and cello that specialises in combining standard chamber repertoire with lesser-known compositions.
As a freelance orchestral player, he worked with various orchestras such as Performing Arts SO, London Gala orchestra London Concert Orchestra, English String Orchestra, Brighton Philharmonic, Oxford Philomusica, Oxford City Orchestra and the Orchestra of Stowe Opera.
